Yaman's Interview with "Ahmet"

For his oral history project on the Gezi events, Yaman interviewed his roommate at Sabanci University. "Ahmet" was an engineering student. Yaman said he chose to interview his roommate because he was a regular at Gezi Park, and very familiar with the “Gezi spirit”.

In his final paper, Yaman makes the following observation:

“The events that began at the end of May 2013 will remain as the most important events of the year 2013 for many people. So much material has accumulated about Gezi Park that we can write, discuss, debate, and even tell stories to our grandchildren.”

From the interview:

“I believe that social movements are necessary to enable freedom and democracy in society. Previously I joined marches for September 12 [1980] and tried to go to Taksim on May 1st. Why did I participate in Gezi Park? It wasn’t just Gezi Park, there were reasons that went way back…I spoke about my own reasons, other people, for example, LGBT individuals who were already excluded from society were even more repressed…I saw for the first time in my life an atmosphere where so many people treated one another like family, protected and looked out for others more than their own selves…”

In this project, the interviewee preferred to remain anonymous.
